How to celebrate Earth Day with Your Pack

After a spin around the sun, April 22nd returns to celebrate Mother Nature and the beauty of the natural world. Earth Day is the perfect day to get out with your pack and experience the outdoors in whatever ways you prefer whether it be on land, sea, or mountain. Take some time to teach your pet how to help keep our planet green, clean, and growing.

Get Outside

Stretch your legs and jump on the Alltrails app to find local hiking trails so you can take your pack on a nice jaunt over the mountains and through the woods. If you are lucky and live near to a dog-friendly National Park, head over and check out a new trail. Every day is a good day to get out and explore the world around you, Earth Day just gives us an extra opportunity to celebrate all things outdoors. If you live in a warmer climate and the water happens to be warm enough to take a dip in, take your dog on a kayaking or paddle boarding excursion down a river or across a lake. Be sure to pack a life vest for you and your dog. Pro tip: wait for sunset.

Earth Day falls on a Friday this year, which gives you the chance to not only spend the day celebrating Mother Nature but also the night/weekend. Take your pack on an overnight camping trip. A night in a tent will help you relax before the work grind continues.

Park Hangout

Gather a group and plan an Earth Day celebration picnic at a local park with your pack and their friends. You could make it a potluck style event and instruct your friends to bring items from their favorite small businesses or make a dish to share. Do not forget to include your dogs in the snacking and bring extra Triumph Jerky Bites. For entertainment purposes, bring games you can play outside like softball, soccer, or cards and if the weather is right, bring a kite. If you would rather organize a pack walk, meet your friends and their dogs at a local greenway for a stroll. Any of these Earth Day will help you get moving and enjoy the fresh air.

Pick up Trash/Trail Care

Earth Day is not only a day to get out and enjoy Mother Nature but also a day to take care of our planet. One of the best ways to care for public nature trails, greenways, and parks is to simply clean up after yourself and your pet. This means following the Leave No Trace guidelines. These guidelines were created to show us how to respect the earth. Organize a trail or park trash collection event with local community members and spread the word to get more people involved. There are plenty of areas near and dear to your heart that need some extra love and attention including your local beach or forest.

Local Earth Day Events

If you are searching for comradery in your quest to celebrate Earth Day, look no further than the internet. With a few Google or Facebook searches, you should be able to find plenty of like-minded community members excited to celebrate Mother Nature.  If your internet search proves to be for naught, call your local community centers! Oftentimes, they have events to help clean up and if you cannot find something in your area. Start your own event but be sure to check with city and county officials before you start your plans.

Plant Something

Help keep the earth growing and green by planting something in honor of Earth Day. If you have the land, resources, and time, plant a tree with The Canopy Project!  This organization has been planting millions of trees since 2010. EARTHDAY.ORG works with global partners to reforest areas in dire need of rehabilitation. Of course, not everyone can plant a tree, it is ok to set your aim a little lower to focus on smaller plants and even an herb pot to compliment your outdoor patio. If you do not have a patio, turn your focus to house plants. House plants help to improve air quality in your home and help you breathe a little easier.
