Pet Friendly Insect Deterrent

You’ve planned your trip, packed all your food, and are prepared to hit the road. You’ve ticked all of the boxes on your pre-trip checklist, but have you thought about insect protection for your pet? Here are 4 options to help keep those pests off your pal!

Flea Collars

Probably the most well-known option for getting rid of fleas, a flea collar is a safe and effective way for dogs and cats to get receive extended flea and tick prevention. Not only are they easy to put on, but they work better the longer they are worn. The oils in the flea collar work their way down your pet's fur over time, giving them all-over flea protection for months!

Apple Cider Vinegar

Apple cider vinegar (ACV) is widely known for its uses in the kitchen, but it has earned a place as a bug repellent realm as well. ACV is known to help repel mosquitos and fleas and could be a great, natural option for your pet. Also, ACV has been used as a natural conditioner for their skin and coat, as well as help clean up stains and odors around the house. The potential downside to using ACV is that it has a very pungent smell.

Lemon Juice

If you are like most people, the smell of vinegar may not be very appealing enough to rub all over your dog. Luckily, there are other options that are not so potent. Lemon juice provides the same flea deterring benefits as apple cider vinegar, but without the smell. Lightly rub some fresh lemon juice into your pet's fur for on-the-go pest prevention. Be careful to not use too much as lemon juice has been known to lighten hair color, especially in the summer months.

Natural Plants

There are plenty of plants that you can put around your house to drive away any hitchhikers you might pick up on your trip. Certain herbs can double as a flavor boost to any home-cooked meal as well as a barrier for insects including rosemary, lavender, and basil. For a great smelling patio option, citronella plants are hardy and have a strong smell for repelling all kinds of pests.
