Training for a 5k with your dog

Running a 5k can be a great goal for people to get out and exercise as well as enjoy some time in the fresh air. Including your pup adds an extra bonus! Here are some steps to get you ready to train for a 5k with your dog!

Consult with your vet

Just like humans, it is important to connect with a doctor or in this case, a veterinarian, before you start any long-form activity with your pet. Bringing your dog in for an exam will give them an opportunity to make sure that your pet is ready to run in a race as well as tell you anything to look out for.

Get the right gear

Whenever you are about to start training for a run, it is important that you have a proper pair of shoes. The same goes for your pup! Even though dogs have pads on their feet, different weather conditions can cause those pads to become cracked, dry, or raw. A simple pair of shoes for your dog can help protect them from the elements.

Another great item for training is a hands-free running leash. The most common one is a belt that would allow the leash to attach to your waist. This keeps your hands free and connected to your center of gravity, reducing the risk of falling.

Find your starting pace

Trying to run a race before doing any training can lead to injuries. The same is true with your dog. Set a date and develop a training plan for both you and your dog with goals along the way. It is always better to start at a pace you are comfortable with and work your way up to the finish line!

 Monitor your dog’s breathing

Did you know that dogs are unable to sweat to cool themselves off like humans do? Instead, they pant to cool off. Carrying a collapsible dog bowl with you to fill up with water after the race will help make sure that they can hydrate quickly and cool off after your race.

Enjoy the race day

After all the time spent training, it’s time to run the race! You’ve prepared yourself and your pup so enjoy the fruits of your labor together.
